Derby to Broome

Derby marks the end of the Gibb River Road, and Broome, where we have spent the past two weeks, is the end of the Savannah Way.

Australia has rolled out the red carpet for us!

The Dampier Peninsula, north of Broome is home to several Aboriginal communities, and has some magnificent beaches with the finest white and red sand.

 This must be mother nature’s art gallery, where the wind has sculptured some beautiful sandstone cliffs, and giant 10m tides draw patterns in the sand.

Tired of travelling we camped on the beach at James Price Point for a few days, just to relax, go for a swim and a walk and just enjoy the loneliness of this beautiful part of the world.

After a few days we were walking through the water to pick another good swimming spot when a 3m shark swam in the waves just a few meters away from us. Plenty of wildlife out here!!

Die Dampier Halbinsel, wo einige Aboriginal Kommunen wohnen, liegt noerdlich von Broome und hat wunderschoene Straende mit feinstem weissen und roten Sand.

Es ist hier wie eine Kunstausstellung der Natur, wo der Wind bildschoene Sandsteinskulpturen formt und gigantische 10m Gezeiten Muster in den Sand malen.

Vom vielen Reisen muede haben wir ein paar Tage am Strand bei James Price Point gecampt, zum Entspannen, zum Schwimmen, Wandern und um die Einsamkeit dieses schoenen Teils der Welt zu geniessen.

Ein paar Tage spaeter wanderten wir durch das Wasser um einen neuen Platz zum schwimmen zu finden, als ein 3m grosser Haifisch vorbei geschwommen kam, gerade ein paar Meter von uns. Ja, es gibt jede Menge Wildniss hier!!

Kununurra to Derby (The Gibb River Road)

The Gibb River Road runs East-West through the Kimberly region and has some spectacular sites along it’s 660km stretch.

Pentecost Crossing

About an hour west of Kununurra is a El-Questro, a private property and an ideal place to spend lots of money on boring things. Emma Gorge and other natural features on this property are quite interesting, but an access fee applies and camping or even a night at their ‘Wilderness Lodge’is unaffordable at El-Questro. We stayed a bit further down the road in a much nicer place, overlooking the Pentecost River.

After travelling along the Cockburn Ranges for a while there is a fairly long stretch of uninteresting landscapes, and then there is the turn-off to Kalumburu. We should have known better but  the Kalumburu Road was in such poor condition that we only travelled the first 60km to Drysdale Station, and then decided to not go on another 160km of axle-breaking corrugations to see Mitchell Falls, but to go for a swim instead at Manning Gorge.

After a night in a picturesque spot near Imintji we went on towards Windjana Gorge, which is part of a Devonian Reef, that existed here over 350 million years ago, when this part of Australia was under the sea.

Eine Stunde westlich von Kununurra is El-Questro, ein privates Anwesen, und ein idealer Platz wo man viel Geld fuer langweilige Dinge lassen kann. Emma Gorge und ein paar andere Plaetze fuer Naturliebhaber sind interessant aber kostenpflichtig und Camping oder eben eine Nacht in deren ‚Wilderness Lodge‘  ist unerschwinglich in El-Questro. Wir haben uns an einen viel besseren Platz gesucht, mit Blick ueber den Pentecost River und da uebernachtet.

Nach der Fahrt durch die Cockburn Ranges gibt es eine Zeit lang nichts interessantes zu sehen, bis man zur Abbiegung nach Kalumburu kommt. Wir haetten es uns denken koennen, aber die Strasse nach Kalumburu war dermassen schlecht, dass wir nach den ersten 60km an der Drysdale Station umgekehrt sind, um uns die restlichen 160km von Axen-brechenden Bodenwellen bis Mitchel Falls zu ersparen. Statt dessen sind wir dann in der Manning Gorge schwimmen gewesen.

Nach einer stillen Nacht an einem bildschoenen Platz in der Naehe von Imintji ging es dann weiter Richtung Windjana Gorge. Diese Felsenlandschaft ist Teil eines Devonischen Riffs, dass hier vor 350 Millionen Jahren existierte, als dieser Teil Australiens noch im Meer war.

Katherine to Kununurra

We finally stocked up on food and everything else we need for the next 6-8 weeks.

 A visit to Katherine Gorge was a bit disappointing when we had to realise that this once beautiful and wild place had become a victim of commercial exploitation. We decided to keep the great memories we had of this place and turned around at the ‘Cicada Lodge’s security gate.

We then travelled the Victoria Highway towards Kununurra, roughly 600km further west. An hour west of Katherine we stayed near Flora River at Gwining National Park and found ourselves surrounded by 6-8 waterfalls as we walked down to Kathleen Falls. What a magical paradise!!

Unfortunately we didn’t consider the Quarantine restrictions at the WA border, and did our best to eat all fresh fruit and vegies we had before leaving the gorgeous rock formations at the Keep River National Park.

After a night at Lake Argyle we headed to Kununurra, the last town before the Gibb River Road. Now there are 660km of gravel roads and some of Australia’s most beautiful places ahead of us.

Wir haben nun endlich wieder reichlich Vorraete und Bier fuer die naechsten 6-8 Wochen. Ein Abstecher zur Katherine Gorge wurde etwas enttaeuschend als wir erkennen mussten dass dieser Platz der einmal schoen und wild war, nun commerziell ausgebeutet ist. Als wir am Sicherheitstor der Cicada Lodge ankamen hatten wir beschlossen umzudrehen und unsere schoenen Erinnerung  so zu behalten wie sie sind.

Von hieraus ging es dann ueber den Victoria Highway nach Kununurra, rund 600km westlich. Eine Stunde von Katherine aus sind wir dann ein paar Tage beim Flora River im Gwining National Park geblieben. Bei den Kathleen Falls waren wir von 6-8 Wasserfaellen umrundet. Ein echtes Paradies!!

Leider hatten wir nicht an die Quarantainebestimmungen an der Grenze zu Western Australia gedacht, und haben unser bestes getan damit all unser frisches Obst und Gemuese gegessen war, bevor wir die schoene Felsenlandschaft im Keep River National Park verlassen hatten. Nach einer Nacht am Lake Argyle ging es dann nach Kununurra, die letzte Ortschaft vor der Gibb River Road. Nun liegen rund 660km Schotterpiste vor uns und auch einige der besten Plaetze die Australien zu bieten hat.
