Katherine to Kununurra

We finally stocked up on food and everything else we need for the next 6-8 weeks.

 A visit to Katherine Gorge was a bit disappointing when we had to realise that this once beautiful and wild place had become a victim of commercial exploitation. We decided to keep the great memories we had of this place and turned around at the ‘Cicada Lodge’s security gate.

We then travelled the Victoria Highway towards Kununurra, roughly 600km further west. An hour west of Katherine we stayed near Flora River at Gwining National Park and found ourselves surrounded by 6-8 waterfalls as we walked down to Kathleen Falls. What a magical paradise!!

Unfortunately we didn’t consider the Quarantine restrictions at the WA border, and did our best to eat all fresh fruit and vegies we had before leaving the gorgeous rock formations at the Keep River National Park.

After a night at Lake Argyle we headed to Kununurra, the last town before the Gibb River Road. Now there are 660km of gravel roads and some of Australia’s most beautiful places ahead of us.

Wir haben nun endlich wieder reichlich Vorraete und Bier fuer die naechsten 6-8 Wochen. Ein Abstecher zur Katherine Gorge wurde etwas enttaeuschend als wir erkennen mussten dass dieser Platz der einmal schoen und wild war, nun commerziell ausgebeutet ist. Als wir am Sicherheitstor der Cicada Lodge ankamen hatten wir beschlossen umzudrehen und unsere schoenen Erinnerung  so zu behalten wie sie sind.

Von hieraus ging es dann ueber den Victoria Highway nach Kununurra, rund 600km westlich. Eine Stunde von Katherine aus sind wir dann ein paar Tage beim Flora River im Gwining National Park geblieben. Bei den Kathleen Falls waren wir von 6-8 Wasserfaellen umrundet. Ein echtes Paradies!!

Leider hatten wir nicht an die Quarantainebestimmungen an der Grenze zu Western Australia gedacht, und haben unser bestes getan damit all unser frisches Obst und Gemuese gegessen war, bevor wir die schoene Felsenlandschaft im Keep River National Park verlassen hatten. Nach einer Nacht am Lake Argyle ging es dann nach Kununurra, die letzte Ortschaft vor der Gibb River Road. Nun liegen rund 660km Schotterpiste vor uns und auch einige der besten Plaetze die Australien zu bieten hat.

After a canoe tour through beautiful Lawn Hill Gorge we made our way to Kingfisher Camp, about 2-3 hours northwest along some pretty ordinary tracks with gates every 8-10km. There isn’t much to the camp other than peace and quiet beside the banks of the Nicholson River. We explored the 8km Upstream walk that ends in a gorge.

The Savannah Way continued past Hell’s Gate (a roadhouse), to Boroloola on the McArthur River, King Ash Bay, Cape Crawford and then 320km through the Limmen National Park to Roperbar.

Lorella Springs is a property with hot springs east of the Nathan River Road. The 29km access track is not for the faint hearted, and suits people who are determined to wreck their vehicles. After 1.5 hours of shaking and negotiating the badly eroded track we finally got there, only to be ripped off with some astronomical fees! Definitely not worth it!! Lost City, Butterfly Springs and Towns River are some of the highlights we found in this area. We finally made our way to Mataranka where we enjoyed a swim in the thermal springs, and eventually ended up in Katherine to stock up on supplies for our long trip through the Kimberley and Pilbara in Western Australia.

Nach einer Kanou-Tour durch die wunderschoene Lawn Hill Gorge, ging es weiter fuer 2-3 Stunden auf einer ziemlich bescheidenen Piste zum Kingfisher Camp. Das Camp liegt am Nicolson River und es ist ruhig und friedlich hier. Ein netter Wanderweg fuehrte uns rund 8km flussaufwaerts zu einer Schlucht.
Von hieraus fuehrt der Savannah Way nach Hells Gate(ein Roadhouse), dann nach Boroloola und King Ash Bay, wo wir auf einem ueberfuellten Caravan Park endlich mal unsere Waesche waschen konnten. Shopping in Boroloola ist relativ preiswert, es gibt da sogar zwei Lebensmittelgeschaefte! Mit neuen Vorraeten und leeren Taschen ging es dann weiter zu Lost City bei Cape Crawford und dann 320km durch den Limmen National Park nach Roperbar.

Lorella Springs war der erste Stop und hat eine Thermalquelle. Der 29km lange Zugangs-Track ist nichts fuer Weicheier, und eigentlich mehr geeignet fuer Leute die ihr Fahrzeug zu Schrott fahren wollen. Nach 1.5 Std Schaukeln und anstrengedem Gelaendefahren kamen wir endlich an, und wurden erstmal mit den Campinggebuehren komplett ueber den Tisch gezogen. Den Frust konnten wir uns nichtmal mit einem Bier an der Bar runterspuelen, denn dafuer haetten wir einen Kredit aufnehmen muessen. Dieser Abstecher war es nicht wert gewesen, aber dafuer beeindruckten uns die steilen Felsen der Lost City, tausende Schmetterlinge in Butterfly Springs,  und am Towns River hatten wir ein parsdiesisches Camp.

Nach einem schoenen Bad in den Thermalquellen von Mataranka (Bitter Springs ist die beste Quelle) ging es dann weiter nach Katherine, wo wir uns morgen mit Vorraeten eindecken, fuer unsere lange Reise durch die Kimberley und Pilbara in West Australien.

Hughenden to Boodjamulla via Savannah Way

ENGLISH

The Savannah Way stretches from Cairns in the north east all the way to Broome in the north west of Australia and goes through some very remote places. We are now at Boodjamulla, better known as Lawn Hill. The government has decided to replace the English names with Aboriginal names, so that we sound more trendy and educated when we talk about these places.  After visiting some outback towns along the way, we celebrated my birthday with a nice cold beer while we were watching the sunset over the sea at Karumba, right at the Gulf of Carpentaria. Normanton, just a bit further south, has a replica of the largest Crocodile that was ever captured in the world. More than 9m long, now that is one large crock!!
The Gregory River that flows just a few meters from where I’m sitting at Lawn Hill, is spring fed and has crystal clear waters, just perfect for a swim if you’re not scared of some harmless freshwater crocodiles. The roads are getting rougher as we travel along, and we are getting a real sense of isolation. The freedom out here is just great!!  We stop and camp by rivers almost every night, or stay for a few days. Unfortunately our food supplies are getting a bit short and we would give anything for an Aldi close by, but the nearest supermarket is just over 1200km away from here.

Der Savannah Way erstreckt sich von Cairns im Nordosten bis Broome im Nordwesten von Australien und fuehrt durch einige sehr abgelegene Gebiete. Wir sind jetzt in Boodjamulla, besser bekannt als Lawn Hill. Die Regierung hat beschlossen alle englischen Namen mit Aboriginal Namen zu ersetzen, damit wir uns besser gebildet anhoeren wenn wir darueber sprechen. Nachdem durch ein paar Outback Orte auf unserem Weg gereist sind, hatten wir meinen Geburtstag in Karumba bei einem schoenen kalten Bier und Sonnenuntergang ueber dem Meer gefeiert. In Normanton, etwas weiter suedlich, gibt es ein Replika des groessten Krokodiles das jemals gefangen wurde. Ueber 9m land.. na das nenn ich ein grosses Krokodil!
Der Gregory River in Boodjamulla fliesst nur ein paar meter von wo ich hier sitze, kommt aus einer Quelle und hat kristallklares Wasser; einfach perfekt zum schwimmen, wenn man keine Angst vor ein paar harmlosen Frischwasser-Krokodilen hat.  Die Pisten werden schlechter und wir fuehlen uns ziemlich isoliert. Die Freiheit hier draussen ist einfach toll! Wir campen fast jede Nacht an einem Fluss oder bleiben fuer ein paar Tage. Leider wird unsere Futterkiste langsam leer und wir wuerden alles geben fuer einen Aldi in der Naehe, aber bis zum naechsten Supermarkt sind es ueber 1200km.
