Skiing in Queenstown, New Zealand

Tassie organised a trip to New Zealand for my special birthday. Since I have never been on skis before in my life, she wanted to show me how much fun it is to go downhill (as you do once you're 50). We had a rainy welcome, but things improved. The first lesson on skis was a bit under-challenging, but I slowly picked it up thanks to Tassie's instructions, and the next day I found myself going on some longer runs. Queenstown itself is a gorgeous little town with heaps of small pubs, cafes, shops and even an Ice-Skating rink. It is located at Lake Wakapitu, the largest lake in NZ. Every morning before the sun came up we were already walking down the hill into the city where a bus took us to the ski fields. The views from the Coronet Peak were spectacular, and there was plenty of snow.

Fuer meinem runden Geburtstag hat Tassie einen Skiurlaub nach Neuseeland organisiert. Da ich in meinem Leben noch nie auf Skiern war, wollte sie mir zeigen wie viel Spass es macht wenn es bergab geht. ('Von 50 an geht's bergab'). Der Ski-Unterricht war etwas unterfordernd,aber Dank Tassie's Anweisungen, fiel der Anfang nicht schwer. Am naechsten Tag war ich schon auf den laengeren Pisten.
Queenstown ist ein gemuetliches Dorf direkt am See Wakapitu, und es gibt dort kleine Kneipen, Cafes, Geschaefte, und sogar ein Eisstadion. Jeden Morgen vor Sonnenaufgang marschierten wir den Berg runter in die Stadt, wo es dann mit dem Bus zu den Skipisten in den Bergen ging.  Die Aussicht von Coronet Peak aus war einfach spektakulaer, und da oben gab es reichlich Schnee.

Vivid Light Show Sydney

English:
We decided to go to Sydney to see the Vivid Light Show. The arrival was rather wet with torrential rain. By the time we reached our hotel we were drenched. But things improved from there. The light show was pretty spectacular. There were lots of interactive attractions all over the CBD.
Best way of getting around was by bus and ferry, and on foot of course. Just before we had to catch our flight back home we got a bit lost in the Walch Bay area, but we made it to the airport just in time.

Wir hatten beschlossen dass wir uns die Vivid Light Show in Sydney ansehen wollten. Zur Begruessung gab es einen Wolkenbruch. Als wir im Hotel ankamen waren wir komplett durchnaesst, aber von da an wurde alles besser. Die Lightshow selber war sehr beeindruckend. Es gab interaktive Attraktionen ueberall im Zentrum. 
Busse und die Faehren sind ideale Transportmittel und natuerlich kommt zu Fuss auch gut zurecht. Kurz vor unserem Heimflug haben wir uns in Walch Bay noch ein bisschen verlaufen, aber wir hatten es gerade noch geschafft vor dem Abflug am Flughafen anzukommen.

 

  

Travelling Back Home

On the way home we wanted to see Canarvon Gorge. Although this is a very remote place, it is a popular destination in Queensland. We managed to book a camp site but not really on the dates we preferred, so we filled in a few days at Blackdown N.P. Apart from some nasty mozzies and cheeky birds there are several interesting places to explore. Best of all, we had the whole place to ourselves.  Mook Mook has some interesting pot-holes and the walk to Rainbow Falls is rewarded with spectacular views. The water there looked inviting but is icy cold. The 250km trip to Canarvon Gorge went through the coal fields, a pretty boring landscape that is dominated by mining.

Obwohl Canarvon Gorge weit abgelegen ist, ist es trotzdem eine beliebtes Reiseziel. Wir hatten es zwar geschafft ein camp zu buchent, aber nicht zu dem Datum das wir eigentlich wollten, also haben wir vorher noch ein paar Tage in Blackdown N.P. verbracht. Ausser ein paar hinterlistingen Mosquitos und frechen Voegeln, gibt es dort ein paar interessante Dinge zu sehen. Mook Mook hat ein paar interessante Auswaschungen und die Wanderung zu Rainbow Falls wird mit spectakulaeren Ausblicken belohnt. Das Wasser laed zum Schwimmen ein, ist aber schnatterkalt. Die 250km bis Canarvon Gorge gingen durch Coal Fields, eine langweilige Landschaft mit Tagebau und Bergwerken.

All up 10,500km... What a trip!!!

The mountain ranges around Canarvon Gorge are all made of sandstone. Continuous Wind and water erosion have created some interesting rock formations with huge overhangs and balancing boulders. The most dramatic part is the 10km long Canarvon Gorge that has been shaped by Canarvon Creek. We walked the best part of the gorge and saw some amazing side gorges with steep and narrow cliffs and the most pristine water. The most tranquil place was Moss Garden with it's beautiful waterfall and moss covered rocks and walls. This was the last stop before heading back home.

Das Gebirge um Canarvon Gorge besteht aus Sandstein. Fortschreitende Wind- und Wassererrosion haben die Landschaft geformt und interessante Felsformen hinterlassen. Der dramatischste Teil ist die 10km lange Canarvon Gorge, eine Schlucht die von den Wassermassen des Canarvon Creek's geformt war. Wir sind durch den groessten Teil der Schlucht gewandert und haben uns die teils engen Seitenschluchten mit ihren steilen Waenden und Kristall-klarem  Wasser angeschaut. Der friedlichste Platz war Moss Garden, eine Seitenschlucht mit einem wunderschoenen Wasserfall und moosbedeckten Felswaenden. Das war der Abschluss und jetzt geht's wieder nach Hause.
