Travelling Back Home

On the way home we wanted to see Canarvon Gorge. Although this is a very remote place, it is a popular destination in Queensland. We managed to book a camp site but not really on the dates we preferred, so we filled in a few days at Blackdown N.P. Apart from some nasty mozzies and cheeky birds there are several interesting places to explore. Best of all, we had the whole place to ourselves.  Mook Mook has some interesting pot-holes and the walk to Rainbow Falls is rewarded with spectacular views. The water there looked inviting but is icy cold. The 250km trip to Canarvon Gorge went through the coal fields, a pretty boring landscape that is dominated by mining.

Obwohl Canarvon Gorge weit abgelegen ist, ist es trotzdem eine beliebtes Reiseziel. Wir hatten es zwar geschafft ein camp zu buchent, aber nicht zu dem Datum das wir eigentlich wollten, also haben wir vorher noch ein paar Tage in Blackdown N.P. verbracht. Ausser ein paar hinterlistingen Mosquitos und frechen Voegeln, gibt es dort ein paar interessante Dinge zu sehen. Mook Mook hat ein paar interessante Auswaschungen und die Wanderung zu Rainbow Falls wird mit spectakulaeren Ausblicken belohnt. Das Wasser laed zum Schwimmen ein, ist aber schnatterkalt. Die 250km bis Canarvon Gorge gingen durch Coal Fields, eine langweilige Landschaft mit Tagebau und Bergwerken.

The mountain ranges around Canarvon Gorge are all made of sandstone. Continuous Wind and water erosion have created some interesting rock formations with huge overhangs and balancing boulders. The most dramatic part is the 10km long Canarvon Gorge that has been shaped by Canarvon Creek. We walked the best part of the gorge and saw some amazing side gorges with steep and narrow cliffs and the most pristine water. The most tranquil place was Moss Garden with it's beautiful waterfall and moss covered rocks and walls. This was the last stop before heading back home.

Das Gebirge um Canarvon Gorge besteht aus Sandstein. Fortschreitende Wind- und Wassererrosion haben die Landschaft geformt und interessante Felsformen hinterlassen. Der dramatischste Teil ist die 10km lange Canarvon Gorge, eine Schlucht die von den Wassermassen des Canarvon Creek's geformt war. Wir sind durch den groessten Teil der Schlucht gewandert und haben uns die teils engen Seitenschluchten mit ihren steilen Waenden und Kristall-klarem  Wasser angeschaut. Der friedlichste Platz war Moss Garden, eine Seitenschlucht mit einem wunderschoenen Wasserfall und moosbedeckten Felswaenden. Das war der Abschluss und jetzt geht's wieder nach Hause.


 

Airlie Beach & Whitesunday Islands

We spent a bit of time at Airlie Beach, a very picturesque little town with hills all around and calm bays with Emerald blue water. Just like Cairns, it has a large artificial lagoon for public swimming. Part of the pristine water front and hill sides have been converted into exclusive apartments, and access to the water is only for residents. Sad to see that Airlie has lost its charm to the developers. We went on a 3-day sailing cruise around the Whitsunday Islands on the SV Whitehaven, an old style tall ship. There were 3 crew all in their twenties, and heaps of fun. Snorkeling and kayaking over the reefs was a great experience and the marine life was as breathtaking as Whitehaven Beach.

Wir sind ein Weile in Airlie Beach geblieben, ein bildschoener Ort umranded mit Huegeln und stillen Buchten mit Emerald-Blauem Wasser. Genau wie in Cairns gibt es hier eine grosse kuenstliche Lagune fuer oeffentliches Baden. Leider haben die Bauunternehmer Teile der wunderschoenen Ufer in Luxuswohnungen verwandelt und der Zugang zum Wasser is nur Anwohnern gestattet. Schade dass Airlie ein bisschen von seinem Charm verloren hat. Spaeter ging es dann auf eine 3-taegige Segeltour an Bord der SV Whitehaven, ein aelters Segelschiff. Die drei Jungs von der Crew waren alle mitte 20 und somit gab es reichlich Spass an Bord. Schnorcheln und mit Kajaks ueber die Riffe fahren war super, und die Fische, Schildkroeten und Korallen waren ebenso atemberaubend wie Whitehaven Beach.

Burdekin Falls Dam - Hardly Known Among Tourists

Back on the mainland we decided to travel south on an inland route rather than suffer the endless road works on the coast road. Burdekin Falls Dam didn't sound like much but as we walked to the viewing platform  a sensational panorama opened up before our eyes. The dam is at full capacity with huge volumes of water rushing down the spill way and over the connecting road, making it impassable. (Ref. last photo) We will now need to back track and do a 400 km detour. The first photo shows the location of the deep gorge with its impressive waterfalls.

Zurueck auf dem Festland haben wir beschlossen die Inlandroute Richtung Sueden zu fahren, statt uns durch die Baustellen der Kuestenstrecke zu quaehlen. Burdekin Falls Dam hat sich nicht grossartig angehoert, aber das Panorama das sich vor uns ausgebreitet hatte als wir zu der Aussichtsplattform gingen, war einfach sensationell. Der Staudamm hat seine Kapazitaet erreicht und riesige Wassermassen laufen ueber die Staumauer und ueber die Verbindungsstrasse Richtung Sueden. (siehe letztes Photo) Wie es aussieht muessen wir jetzt einen 400km-Umweg fahren.

Magnetic Island - A Little Paradise

After we spent a few relaxing days at Mission Beach we planned our next trip to Magnetic Island, where we stayed at Horseshoe Bay in the North. The island is a little tropical paradise with only 2000 residents. There are huge granite boulders dominating most of the cute little bays. We did some of the steep hilly walks and rewarded ourselves with a nude swim in the warm waters.

Nachdem wir ein paar Tage in Mission Beach entspannt hatten ging es mit der Faehre nach Magnetig Island. Die Insel ist ein kleines tropisches Paradies mit gerade mal 2000 Einwohnern. Es gibt da riesige Granitfelsen die die Landschaft und die kleinen Buchten dominieren. Wir haben ein paar steile Wanderungen gemacht und uns anschliessend mit FKK-schwimmen belohnt.

Cobbold Gorge to Mission Beach

Cobbold Gorge is at the end of a long dirt road two hours west of Undara and that was our next destination. We were surprise to have found the most luxurious accommodation of the entire trip. The modern pool is worth mentioning as it saved us from heat exhaustion several times. The Gorge itself is absolutely beautiful although access is only by tour, but it was well worth it. Day temperatures in the 40's got a bit much after a while and started travelling back to the coast. By the afternoon we reached the mountain range with thick rain clouds on the horizon, and ended up in Wooroonooran NP. There are some of the best waterfalls and swimming spots in the middle of the thickest rainforest. After some rough bush camping we are now in a civilised camp at Mission Beach to relax for a few days.

Cobbold Gorge liegt am Ende einer langen Sandpiste und das war unser naechstes Ziel. Wir waren ueberrascht dass wir hier soweit die beste Unterkunft gefunden hatten. Besonders sollte ich den Swimmingpool erwaehnen, denn der hat uns einige Male vom Hitzschlag bewahrt. Die Schlucht selber ist bildschoen, obwol man nur mit einer organisierten Tour dahin kommt, aber es war es wert gewesen.
Tagestemperaturen um die 40 wurden dann doch ein bisschen viel, so ging es dann wieder zurueck an die Kueste. Am Nachmittag kamen wir dann zurueck zum Gebirge, und am Horizont zogen mal wieder dicke Regenwolken auf. Wir sind dann im Wooroonooran National Park geblieben, wo es mitten im dicken Regenwald die schoensten Wasserfaelle und Bademoeglichkeiten gibt. Nach ein paar groben Busch-Camps sind wir jetzt zum Entspannen in einem Zivilisierten Camp in Mission Beach.
