Ningaloo Reef

A mile stone...

The red dust of the Pilbara had settled on everything we had, including ourselves and it was time to head west to see the Coral Coast of Western Australia.

Life is hard out here...

We took the most direct route to Exmouth, a very popular destination for Grey Nomads who migrate here in large numbers with their oversize caravans and expandable semitrailers to spend the winter months up here.

Unfortunately, once they find a camp they sit on it for months and watch their mega-size satellite TV in the air conditioned comfort of their portable mansions. As a result of th mismanagement of the park the die-hard travellers in their hippie vans, who want to stay for a few days and explore the extraordinary Ningaloo Reef will either not find a camp here at all, or they have to camp illegally and risk a hefty fine.

The western side of the Exmouth Peninsula is a huge lagoon (over 100km long) where the Ningaloo Reef extends from the breakers right up to the beach.  We snorkelled at Turquoise Bay, one of the best spots to explore the reef and marine life.

Swimming in the calm, warm water, alongside with a big turtle for a while was an unforgettable experience. Further south the coast with its unique beaches can only be accessed through gigantic stations that are several hundred square kilometers in size.

Our next stop from here is the Kennedy Range, about 250km west.

Der rote Staub von der Pilbara hatte sich auf allem abgelagert was wir dabei hatten, einschliesslich uns selber, und es wurde Zeit weiter zu ziehen, Richtung Westen, zur Coral Coast.

Ueber die kuerzeste Route ging es nach Exmouth, ein sehr beliebtes Ziel fuer die Grauen Nomaden, (Reisende Rentner), die massenweise mit ihren uebergrossen Caravans und ausfaltbaren Sattelschleppern hier hin ziehen um die Wintermonate hier zu verbringen. Wenn sie sich dann einmal auf einem Camp niedergelassen haben, dann bleiben sie in der Regel monatelang da und schauen sich den neuesten Tratsch auf ihren megagrossen Fernsehern an, und all das im Komfort ihrer voll klimatisierten Caravans.

Wegen der schlechten Parkverwaltung  bleibt so oft kein Platz fuer die wahren Reisenden mit ihren Hippie-Autos, die sich fuer ein paar Tage das Korallenriff anschauen moechten.  Auf der Westseite der Exmouth-Halbinsel gibt es eine riesige Lagune (ueber 100km lang), wo sich das Ningaloo Reef von der Brandung bis hin zum Strand erstreckt.

Teilweise ist die Brandung etliche Kilometer vom Strand weg. Turquoise Bay ist die beste Bucht wenn man sich fuer Meeresleben interessiert.

Mit einer grossen Schildkroete in dem stillen, warmen Wasser fuer eine Weile zu schwimmen war schon eine tolle Erfahrung!

Weiter suedlich fuehrt der Zugang zu den einzigartigen Straenden durch gigantische Farmen, die einige hundert Quadratkilometer gross sind. Unser naechstes Ziel ist nun Kennedy Range, ein Gebirgszug 250km westlich.
