Great Days at the Tip of Cape York

ENGLISH

The only Service Station in Bamaga charged us $330 for a tank of fuel. We didn't want to use up all that fuel at once and decided to stay a few more days at Eliot Creek, in order to recover from that shock. (Gee, things are cheap up here...) With fresh courage, an almost full tank of fuel and an empty wallet we headed south to the old Moreton Telegraph Station where we camped under one of the original old Telegraph Poles. (How exciting...)

Die einzige Tankstelle in Bamaga hatte uns $330 fuer eine Tankfuellung abgenommen. Wir wollten den Sprit jetzt nicht auf einmal verfahren, und haben beschlossen ein paar Tage beim Eliot Creek zu bleiben um uns von dem Schrecken zu erholen. (Mann, alles ist so billig hier...)

Mit frischem Mut, vollem Tank und leerer Brieftasche ging es dann wieder Richtung Sueden zur alten Moreton Telegraphen Station , wo wir unter einem originalen, historischen Telegraphenmast gecampt hatten. (ach, wie aufregend...)

  

Weipa to the Tip of Cape York Peninsula (Old Pajinka) via Gun Shot Creek

ENGLISH:
Bramwell Junction was our next stop, and we camped in the middle of city of termite mounds. Here we had to decide to either take the “real man's” 4WD track, where hundreds of cars are being trashed every year, or to take the Bypass Road. We decided for the Bypass Road, but we couldn’t help taking the turn-off to the famous Gunshot Creek crossing. It is here where most cars suffer severe damage at the almost vertical 5m drop that ends up in a muddy water hole. (See Video). It took a few beers before the driver in the video had enough courage to do it. There are easier drops into the creek, but they’re not a challenge.
The highlight was Elliot River with its beautiful Water Falls and swimming holes where we spent all day in and out of the water. We camped at Canal Creek where we saw again plenty of 4WD action. Many “Conquerors” drove their cars and trailers with painfully screaming  engines up an almost impossible climb with deep holes, quick sand, mud and large rocks, instead of using the much easier sand track only 50m upstream.

Bramwell Junction war unser naechster stop, und wir haben in mitten einer Stadt von Termitenhuegeln gecampt. Hier mussten wir uns entscheiden ob wir den Gelaende-Track fuer die „echten Maenner“ nehmen wollen oder den Bypass fuer die Weicheier. Wir haben uns fuer den Weichei-Track entschlossen, konnen es uns aber nicht verkneifen einen Abstecher zur beruehmten Gun Shot Bach-Ueberquerung zu fahren. Hier, wo der Track fast senkrecht 5m tief in ein Schlammloch geht, werden die meissten Fahrzeuge schwer beschaedigt. (Siehe Video). Der Fahrer im Video hatte sich vorher reichlich Mut angetrunken. Es gibt da noch einen leichteren Track in den Bach aber das waere ja keine Herausvorderung.
Der Hoehepunkt war Elliot River mit seinen wunderschoenen Wasserfaellen und Pools wo wir den ganzen Tag gebadet hatten. Wir haben dann am Canal Creek gecampt, wo es wiedermal reichlich Allrad-Action gab. Viele Spezies fahren da mit kreischenden Motoren ein fast unmoeglichen Aufstieg mit tiefen Loechern, Treibsand, Schlamm und dicken Steinen, anstatt den viel leichteren Sand-Track 50m weiter flussaufwaerts zu nehmen.

Further north is Jardine River, that can only be crossed by Ferry. The ride is only about three times as long as the barge itself. It costs only $88 return, takes about a minute and we enjoyed every second of it. Gee, things are cheap up here...
The tip of Cape York is actually called Pajinka, and it consists of several rock mounts and a sign post (See Photo). After driving on heavily corrugated roads and along a windy track through rainforest we arrived there just before sunset. This must be the windiest place in Oz, the wind was that strong it almost blew us off the continent. We decided to get settled at Loyalty Beach on the more protected western side and enjoyed our million dollar view for a few days.

Weiter noerdlich ist Jardine River, der nur mit der Faehre ueberquert werden kann. Der Fluss ist vielleicht drei mal so breit wie die Faehre lang ist. Die Ueberfahrt kostet $88 hin und zurueck, dauert gerade mal eine Minute aber wir haben jede Sekunde davon ausgiebig genossen. Mann, alles ist so billig hier oben...
Die Spitze von Cape York heist Pajinka und besteht aus ein paar Steinhaufen und einem Schild. (Siehe Photo). Nach einer ermuedenden Fahrt auf schwer ausgewaschenen Pisten und einem kurvigem Track durch Regenwald kamen wir da gerade noch vor Sonnenuntergang dort an. Es war so windig dass uns der Wind fast vom Kontinent geblasen haette. Wir haben beschlossen ein paar Tage an dem mehr geschuetzten Loyalty Beach zu bleiben, und unsere Millionen-Dollar-Aussicht zu geniessen.

Going to Weipa

From Mossman we travelled through the Daintree Forest (where we sank our last car) and took the Bloomfield Track to Helenvale, and then on to Lakeland and spent a few days at Kalpowar at Lakefield National Park, where we spotted our first crocodile in the wild. In order to make it harder to find this place, the name will soon be changed to "Rinyirru CYPAL" and it will be illegal to use the word "National Park" when referring to a CYPAL".
We have now arrived in Weipa, a nice mining town with a picturesque foreshore, a Woolworths, and a noisy and crowded caravan park, the only one around. Today we are heading off toward the famous Gunshot Creek Crossing. From now on the road will be a lot rougher and even more isolated.

Von Mossman aus sind wir weiter durch den Daintree Forest gefahren (da wo wir unser letztes Auto versenkt hatten), und sind dann entlang dem Bloomfield Track nach Helenvale und ueber Lakeland nach Kalpowar im Lakefield National Park, wo wir sogar unser erstes Krokodiel in der Wildniss gesehen haben. Damit es in Zukunft schwieriger wird die National Parks zu finden, hat die Regierung beschlossen alle National Parks umzubenennen. Lakefield National Park wird kuenftig "Rinyirru CYPAL" heissen und es wird strafbar sein einen CYPAL als National Park zu bezeichnen.
Wir sind jetzt in Weipa, ein netter Ort mit einer bildschoenen Kuestenlandschaft, einem Supermarkt und einem lauten und ueberfuellten Campingplatz. Von hier an werden die Tracks schlechter, und wir werden weit weg von Civilisation sein.
